What is On Page Optimization?

In our previous post, we have discussed and gave the definition of search engine optimization (SEO) and the three stages involved for SEO. Of the three stages of SEO, we have already discussed Keyword Research. In this post, let us get started with On Page Optimization.

What is On Page Optimization?

By this time, you might already have your keyword or keyword phrase that you would like the search engine to search for your website.

On Page Optimization is the process of optimizing the pages of your website, but to start with, let us concentrate on the main page or home page of your website. This is so important in SEO in order for the search engines to navigate easily and search for your website. Optimizing the main page is just a case of placing your target keyword phrase in all the right places on that web page. This includes the page title, headlines, body text, alt attributes and the meta tags.

Here are the tips for the main places on a web page that you should put on your keywords when you are optimizing your website:
  • In the <TITLE> tags- This is the text that is displayed along the title bar of your browser.
  • In the Headline tags- especially the <H1> tag.
  • In the ALT attribute of images- Mention your keywords in one or two of the alt attributes of any of the images on your page.
  • Through out the body of your web page- Ensure that your keywords are mentioned at the beginning, middle and end.
  • In the anchor text of links- If you have links to this page elsewhere on your website try to make sure that the anchor text (clickable text) has your keywords in it.
  • In the <META> tags- although the main search engines no longer use these tags for ranking, you may want to mention your keywords in the keywords tag in the description tag. The description tag is used by Google and other search engines to display a summary of your site when it is displayed in the search engine results. Source
So, we have already done with the first two stages involved in SEO. In the next post, we will discuss with the third stage of SEO which is the Off Page Optimization. A stage that plays a very vital role in search engine optimization. Keep in tune.
